It's the fraudulant practice of luring the customer in with an advertisement for a product, usually at an unprofitably low price, and then revealing to the customer that the advertised product is no longer available but a higher priced substitute is. I'll give you an example. There was a gas station in the midwest that advertised the price of a gallon of gas at an unbelievably low price. But, the set for that gas was only available on one of the station's pumps. It was up to the customers to figure out which pump had the cheaper gas or else pay an inflated price at one of the other pumps. Pretty sneaky huh?

 

Here's another instance for those of you who buy electronics on line. The price of a camera or camcorder will often be advertised at a really low price. But, when the customers try to order the product they are instructed to call a special customer service number. When they call the agent will then explain to the customer that the product doesn't come with any of the software, batteries or cables it needs to function. But, they can buy all the necessary peripherals in a bundle (at a higher then normal cost, of course). It's one of the oldest tricks in the book.
