US Porn Industry Valued At $12 Billion

Steven Hirsch of Vivid Entertainment. Absolutely rolling in it.
This article is one of the most interesting pieces I've read about the industry I've seen recently.
I'm less interested in the facts about the amount of money finding its way back into California because, well, I don't live there. Nor is the stuff about the amount that performers earned because we know about the fact that many are still earning peanuts.
For me, the most interesting aspect of the site was the fact that they report that rental and sales of DVDs dipped dramatically last year. You'd think that the impact that this will have online would be pretty huge.
For a start, I expect online rental sites such as Movie Monster to pretty much die out. I don't really see how they can possibly expect to keep being a success when most DVD download sites can offer over 2000 DVDs for a really low monthly fee.
But I think the trend here is echoed throughout all areas of the movie and DVD industry. Mainstream movies are also suffering from this trend to a certain extent and it's bound to filter into the porn industry.
Soon though, it looks as though your friendly neighbourhood sex shop could die out soon.
